Project Title: Earthquakes in New Mexico

Earthquakes are associated with volcanic eruptions. The location and movement of swarms of tremors indicate the movement of magma through the volcano.(1) It is noted although, there are no active volcanoes in New Mexico but the substance of magma movement within the gound layer is present. So in fact there is earthquake activity in the state of New Mexico. Earthquakes are a natural occurrence that not only effect our state, but also have a major impact on the world.(2) It will be our intent to develop a C++ program that will 1. determine earthquake occurence for every year from 1962 ato 1998; 2. Compare earthquake magnitude year to year; 3. Compare earthquake occurrence month/year; and 4. The high and low points of magnitude of earthquakes. We hope to be able to predict earthquake occurence and the relative magnitude.

Thus far, we have done research legwork of earthquakes in and around New Mexico and especially the community of Scorro. We are very fortunate to have the IRIS and the expertise available to us here on campus,NMTech. We have found our mentors from the New Mexico Tech School of Mine Professional and the SuperComputer Personnel. We have had the opportunity to have access to the internet and library if needed. Dr. Rick Aster, who was also instrumental in providing us with earthquake data.

We are progressing relatively smoothly. We are fortunate to have a group of individuals who are willing to take on project responsiblities and at the same time keep intack with the group.
