Challenge Team Abstract

Team Number: 034 School Name: Shiprock High School Area of Science: Medicine and Health Project Title: Medication for the Common Cold

The common cold occurs more often than any other disease. Its symptoms are, coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, body aches, sinus congestion, fever, and headaches. Our plan is to figure out which over- the- counter drugs would get rid of a cold and will determine what the ingredients are for each medication and why there effective. We will also show graphs of each medication used among the American society.

We will test different brands of cough syrup, aspirin, vapor rub, and cold pills. We will analysis brands such as Vicks, Nyquil, Top Crest, Tylenol, Bayer, Sudafed, Excedrin and etc. This experiment will be tested on three people who are afflicted with the cold. Person 1 will be tested on the Vick's cold syrup brand, and the Tylenol. Person 2 will be tested on the Nyquil cough syrup brand, and Sudafed. Person 3 will be tested on the Top Crest cough syrup brand and the Excedrin Aspirin. After this experiment, results will be posted online as to which medicine worked. Was it the brand name medicine or the generic brand?
