Project Title: Simulated Reforestation of the Cerro Grande Burned Area

A Simulated Reforestation of the Cerro Grande Burned Area

On may 5, 2000 the Cerro Grande Fire was ignited. The original fire started as a prescribed burn at the Bandelier National Monument which is approximately 8 miles from Espanola NM.The total estimated area that was burned was 47,650 acres. The vegetation that was burned included pinon, juniper, and ponderosa pine.

Purpose of our program

The purpose of our program is to create a mathematical model to determine the length of time it would take for the Cerro Grande area to regenerate and repopulate to where it was before the fire.

Input data

We hope to simulate an area the size of the burned area (47,650 acres) and simulate the regrowth of the vegetation.

Program development plan

We will attempt to gather information on the regrowth of vegetation that was burned and determine the regrowth rates. The factors such as human replanting and other variables will not be taken into factor during this simulation.

Output data

Using supercomputers our output data will be processed into time variables showing the length of time it would take for all the trees to regenerate to a fully repopulated area.
