Project Title: To Tear or Not to Tear
The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), which can withstand 1700 newtons before complete failure, is commonly torn during high school sports or activities. This is a very severe injury. The ACL will not heal on its but is most commonly replaced with the much stronger patella tendon during reconstructive surgery.
The purpose of our project is to determine what factors will further affect the elasticity, the capacity of a material to recoil to its original shape after application of stress, of this ligament, and what factors are important in loading the ACL to failure. This will allow us to create a C++ computer program that incorporates these factors (such as height, weight, age, sex...) to predict proneness to an ACL injury.
