Because tribal land is a trust, the typical infrastructure of incorporated areas is nonexistent. Navajos living on the reservation in San Juan County generally live in manufactured housing. These homes are typically clustered around a “home-site lease”. Given the soil quality in the area, this situation provides interesting engineering opportunities for solving the question of septic system placement. Because of the unique setting, many times odiferous fumes emanate from the home site cluster. We will study data of soil composition to determine the most appropriate placement of a septic system to minimize odor and hygiene problems and improve waste management efficiency.
