Project Title: Tooting!
The Navajo Reservation has no infrastructure to deal with the environmental concerns of personal(body function) waste disposal. Because Navajos live on trust land, the Reservation is populated with manufactured houses. These settlements currently handle waste through septic systems.
Because of environmental concerns with odors emanating from many of these sites, we intend to investigate septic system suitability through soil analysis on the Reservation. We will also attempt to provide alternative solutions to the current septic system.
The team will design a graph and describe the friability method to determine soil content at specific home sites. Through Excel and Java, we will provide a simple method for the prospective resident to determine the quantity of clay in the soil at the home site.
Thus far, we have gathered data of soil analysis(soil composition) for the area through the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s soil surveys. We are currently in the process of analyzing this data, working on the code, and finalizing details for suggested solutions for the BIA and related agencies.
Finally, we intend to create a useful program and graph so that not only can the various agencies use this readily but also the resident(s) of the home site.
