Project Title: Effects of Drinking and Driving
There is a significant drunk driving problem in the state of New Mexico. People in New Mexico are nearly twice as likely to die in an alcohol-related traffic accident as the national average, according to the DWI Resource Center in Albuquerque.
“Among all New Mexico drunk drivers who were killed, 67% had BAC’s of .08 or above. Among young adult drivers (ages 20-34), 41% had BAC’s of at least 0.20, or twice the legal limit in the state of New Mexico.”
Drunk Driving remains a serious national problem that tragically affects thousands of victims annually. Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable. In most countries the minimum age for driving licensure is older than or equal to the drinking age, unlike the United States in which all states allow licensure well before drinking is permitted.
Our team will attempt to increase the age of purchasing liquor, reducing the DWI fatality crash rates in New Mexico, and also pushing for stiffer penalties for accused drunk drivers involved in DWI fatalities.
Our team hopes to understand the behavioral and social science effects of significant drunk driving consequences in New Mexico.
