AiS Challenge Team Interim

Team Number: 061

School Name: Shiprock High School

Area of Science: Medicine and Health

Project Title: Type 2 Calamity

Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes, has many causes, including age, gender, diet and family history. Our team chose the topic for a better understanding of the disease, to protect ourselves from being diagnosed and to inform our peers so that they may also be aware of this disease.

DPP Information

DPP is a research study now being conducted in Shiprock as well as twenty-six other sites around the United States. The goal is to find out if Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented or delayed for the people at risk because of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). IGT means a person's blood sugar is higher than normal but not as high as in diabetes. We will be performing the "Lifestyle" treatment with goals of 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of exercise per week. The Lifestyle treatment has reduced the development of diabetes by 58% during earlier studies performed by NNMC. We hope to help reduce the risk of developing diabetes for the students at our school.

Problem:

People have tended to ignore the possibility of developing diabetes. No one believes it to be a real problem because many people have overlooked the fact that our culture, the Navajo's, have more people diagnosed with diabetes than anyone else.

Solution:

Last month we met with a mentor from NNMC who has been involved with the DPP. She came to us with the thought that we perform our own program among our fellow students. We will begin next month, January 2003.

What we have achieved:

We have decided to begin our program next month in hopes of reducing our member's weights so that they will not be at risk of getting diabetes. The members of our group have each looked ahead in the lessons we will be teaching our participants. Now we are in the process of scouting participants that meet our requirements.

REQUIREMENTS:

Expected Results:

We have already begun keeping track of what we have eaten so that we will be ahead of our own class, keeping our results so that we may know what to expect. We will have to begin a diet, but we must take care that we continue to stay healthy.
