Our computational model is a StarLogo simulation representing the movement
of a contaminant into through rainfall and runoff. We built 5 variables
into the model: annual precipitation, permeability of stratum, runoff and
percent of contaminant. This model is a 2 dimensional cross section view
showing the movement downward into the stratum into the groundwater. Each
of these variables can be set for each particular well or water source as
needed. The permeability can be set to the porosity of the rocks at the
particular sites, runnoff can be adjusted to eigher the average rainfall
or on a yearly basis, etc.
There are several extensions that could be applied in the future as more
research is done. As measurements are compiled over a period of time from
each site thhose can also be factored in. Another model using a Gaussian
simulation could also be developed to show the movement of the
contaminants with the dilution and advection components of the flow. This
view would be a top view, which would give a more 3 dimensional model.
