Operation “Don’t Litter”

Team: 72

School: NAVAJO PREPARATORY

Area of Science: Envriomental

Interim: Problem Definition:
Trash has always been a big problem; you see it along the road and all around you. In our project we are going to figure out which week of the month accumulates more trash. We also want to know whether the season matters in determining how much trash was contributed. We plan to use our school campus for our source of collecting data. At our private school we wanted to know how many pieces of trash on the ground grew rapidly within certain areas. We also wanted to know how the amount of trash varied from the beginning of each week till the end of each week.

We will use two different techniques like taking photographs and using one equation to measure how much trash grows weekly. We will be using the photographs to measure how much trash accumulates in certain areas, which students hang around and walk through. We will calculate the total amount of trash in each area, by averaging the each weeks collected data. We also plan to make a code about how much trash grows and spreads throughout campus. We also want to see how much trash is actually picked up within our students and staff population. From our data and equation we plan to designate the best week of the month to have our campus clean up.

We plan to model our project using a program; StarLogo, which will help us develop a code to represent our campus and students. Within the Code we will have students dropping trash and also students picking up trash. We will use the school population to help develop our code that will best represent our school. This code will help reach our goal of developing the best campus clean up week.

Problem Solution:
Our Solution to litter problem at our school is to find a place to put our trash cans where students will be able to recognize what they are use for. When collecting data we will observe how much trash is dropped and how much is picked up. This will help us determine where the trash cans are going to be set up. We will also use the data to figure out when is the best time to have a campus clean up. When we model our project we are going to have the litters and the cleaners. This will help us see what our out come will be like.

Progress to Date:
We have started our program and we are using StarLogo to model our school and students. We have collected numerous amounts of data that complies with our school. We are using our student population that will show the amount of litters and also that amount of cleaners (good students who throw away there trash).

We also have taken our own data every week to show that within our areas students do litter. We also have calculated that within certain areas on different days more students tend to have cleaner areas on different days. On the other hand within certain areas things are more trashed.

Expected Results:
After all of our data collecting, calculating, and model collecting we plan to know where the best place is to put our trashcans. The results that we plan on accomplishing are to have a time designated for our school’s campus clean up. Also, to have a much cleaner campus with trashcans that is more convenient for students and faculty to dispose of their trash.
