Using Brownian Motion to Model the Dispersion of Pollutants in Water
Problem: Chemicals today are polluting our water resources.If toxins are being thrown into a body of water, how long and in what manner would it take the pollutant to completely disperse.
Solution: To solve this problem a supercomputer will be used to create a multidimensional array, to descritize a contained body of water, and calculate the Brownian Motion and microgravity effects on the foreign molecules. For each time step, the computer will recalculate the pollutants new positions and concerntration.
Results: Using visualization software to create a 3-D model of the system, the results will display a time dependant step-by-step process showing each level through which the toxins spread (disperse). Using this model, more complex systems can be created and applied to real world situations.
