School Name:

Silver High School

Area of Science:

Behavioral and Social Science

Project Title:

The 3A's: Academics, Activities, Athletics, and the Correlation Between

The purpose of this project is to determine if there is a correlation between participation in student activities and athletics at Silver High School with student success as evaluated by grade point average (GPA). To determine if there is a correlation the group will be using a FORTRAN 90 program with data from surveys passed out to students. The survey will ask their sex, age, and grade. In addition, each student will be asked what activities and athletics they participated in last year. The group will then obtain the individual's GPA. If our school follows the trend that has been established by studies of this type in other schools, the group can expect to find that there is a correlation and it is positive in nature. The replication of this study in Silver High School should show that students involved in student activities and athletics will do better academically than those students who do not participate in the activities or athletics sponsored by the school. The debate as to how essential athletics and activities are to a student's education and whether or not they are a fundamental part of a student's education has raged for years. The group believes it is imperative that those of us who believe that athletics and activities are a vital part of a student's educational exerience should prepare a defense against anti-activity zealots who cut those areas from our schools' educational programs. Through research, the group believes that the evidence will show that these programs are a great value to our students.
