WHAT OUR PROJECT WILL DO:
Our project will take the output from a FORTRAN program that will

  1. Calculate the damage to two (2) strategically supreme locations in what was formerly known as the U.S.S.R.,
  2. Determine the amount of damage dealt to the environment from the soil to the animal life,
  3. Determine the amount of fallout and whether or not it will reach the "jetstream".

    Once the FORTRAN program is complete we will try to simulate the amount of fallout that is circulated in the jetstream.

    Robert B. is currently trying to obtain weather pattern software from the National Weather Service. As of yet they have failed to respond to his requests. His teammates have been researching past nuclear blasts and the effects of the blasts on the environment.

    Tony, Rolando and Erin are learning FORTRAN programming language. It is a slow but steady process, considering that Erin and Tony are at Mesa Alta Junior High School and Rolando is in a different class than Robert. We are also learning Microsoft PowerPoint. The group as a whole has picked up this program quickly. Robert is currently working with MATLAB, a mathematical modeling and simulation program. It uses algebraic euquations to graph linear, second and third degree equations. The group is also beginning to learn STELLA, a statistical modeling program.

    Erin Slater is doing much of the scientific research. Rolando Yazzie is serving as recorder and is starting to learn MATLAB. Tony Gonzalez is learning HTML and PowerPoint. For Erin, Tony and Rolando, it is their first year in the Challenge and they are learning the ropes quickly.

    The group is going to start meeting briefly each week to brief each other on everyone's progress. We will also have scheduled meetings once a week to work on programming, the presentation, and other things that are necessary to complete this project. We also plan on contacting more scientists in the area of nuclear reactions to determine the size and destructive power of bombs; ecologists to determine the effects of explosions on the ecosystem; and meteorologists to get data on the flow of the jet stream. We are making progress and are addressing problems as they arise.

    Finally, Robert will be going to San Juan College to work on their VAX computer. He has been informed that the college has a FORTRAN compiler, so it will be easier to use in conjunction with the computers at Los Alamos.

    We feel our project will successfully tell us what we want to know about nuclear fallout.
