The pricnciples behind speaker casings are deeply rooted in acoustics and sound. By studing these subjects along with computer science and mathematics we will be able to come up with a set of formulas that will achieve the desired result.
To achieve this result for the last few months we have gathered data from places such as: Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Department (http://www.val.me.vt.edu/), University of Central Florida Noise Laboratory (http://www-cee.engr.ucf.edu/debts/ncpa), National Center for Physical Acoustics (http://sunset.backbone.olemiss.edu/debts/ncpa), and Institue on Sound and Vibration Research, University of South Hampton (http://www.isur.soton.acouk).
At the same time as we have conducted researcyh into acoustics we have furthered our knowledge in computer science. Particularly in the area of programming. We have investigated our options as to which language would be best. We are examining using the languages: C++, Pascal, Visual Basic, or Fortran.
To learn the basics behind computer programming we are taking several classes at the High School, and the local community college. Amongst these are classes in operating systems being evaluated for use with the program; these include: Windows95, DOS, Linux and Macintosh. The current languages being learned are C++ and pascal; though the others are still up for consideration such as Visual Basic and Fortran.
By the end of project (April) we expect to have a semi-funtional program which can compute the formuals and equations necessary for the desired results. We expect the program to be text based and will return it's values in a standard values. The user will input several of the key variables in order to demonsrate the flexability of the program.
About 6 weeks to a month before the challenge ends we hope to have all of our research gathered and most of it analyzed. We will begin laying out the basic structure of our program and begin the first attemts at it. The first revision should be done no later than two weeks before the challenge ends.
This is assumded to be an ongoing project for the members of the team to continue next year, those that are left. Preliminary design for the goals for the completely finished project will be finished by the end of the challenge.
