Challenge Team Abstract
The group objective is to determine what components in the salt beds at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) would contain the spread of nuclear waste, and discover some answers to problems encountered in waste management. Each component in the salt test will be tested to determine whether it is a single element, a combination of elements, or the complete compound in the salt the prevents the nuclear wastes from spreading. The radiation that is found in the salt will be tested for alpha particles. Even though Alpha particles can be easily stopped, they are harmful if they are swallowed or inhaled. While the salt is shielding us from the radioactivity moisture, the salt molecules are encapsulating the waste in the salt. Team Members Sponsoring Teachers Project Advisor(s)
