Challenge Team Abstract
In ancient Greece, the Greek philosopher, Pythagorus hypothesized that the universe could be described mathematically. Using this idea, it is believed the formation of galaxies can also be described in this manner. Generally speaking, there is an enormous quantity of stars in the known universe. With so many stars, a pattern for the formation of the smaller galaxies should exist. It is the purpose of this project to model the formation of these galaxies using a supercomputer. This project will use mathematical simulations to model the stars. With equations derived from orbital mechanics and calculus, the paths of stars will be modeled and shown by a two-deminsional graph on the supercomputer. Many aspects will be limited to make the problem workable and yet realistic. The program language will be written in C++. With this, the equations will run in a logical order and form a graph that models a galaxy. There will also be a web page that shows the data in a concise and orderly form. By the end of this project, it is hoped to understand the concepts of galaxies. This challenge will test the teams knowledge, technology, and resources. This will stimulate the mind and hopefully correctly model the galaxy. Team Members Sponsoring Teachers Project Advisor(s) |
