To track, by computer simulation, the movement of the saline water interface in the Artesian Aquifer near Roswell, New Mexico in response t o pumping from that aquifer for the purpose of predicting future trends an d possible alleviation of the problem.

By computer modeling, this project will show the movement of the saline water interface into the freshwater Artesian Aquifer north and east of Roswell, NM. The movement of the interface has benn in responce to large scale pumping of the aquifer for irrigation and municipal puposes over a period of many years. The pumpage has occured primarily to the west of t he saline interface, causing a reduction of head in the aquifer, causing a decrease in the natural gradient of the surface toward the southeast. This, in turn has the pressure against saline encroachment from the east , causing movement of saline water into the fresher part of the aquifer. With a reduction in pumpage, due to various factors, the head in the aquifer has recovered to some extent and the interface appears to have stabilized or retreated to the east. This model proposes to show how further regulation of pumpage can be utilized to control further saline encroachment.
