Team Number: 035 School Name: Shiprock High School Area of Science: Engineering (Electronics) Project Title: Voice Activated Television Project Abstract: http://www.challenge.nm.org/Abstacts/035.shtml Interim Report: http://www.challenge.nm.org/Interim/035.shtml Final Report: http://www.challenge.nm.org/FinalReports/035
Our project is in the Engineering (Electronics) category. We planned to create a voice activated television set using a computer with a microphone. The problem of our project is the programming. Our intentions were to activate the television set from anywhere in a room using voice activation. We gathered our research from the Internet in hopes that we would get a good understanding of voice recognition. We were fortunate enough to find web-sites that contained voice recognition, unfortunately they did not show how voice recognition actually works. Most of the sites that we looked at were mostly company sites that were selling software containing voice recognition. We found two pages that caught our interest, which were "smARTspeak" and ZDNET's "Janus project." However, we were unable to get permission from Janus to display their page as a source. We are using the English language because it's the most common language used in America. We put the keywords that were needed into wave format, but we were unable to use them. We were also going to use Navajo language and Spanish language for the indigenous peoples and the Hispanics, but it never quite worked out due to computer problems.
II. INTRODUCTION:The project we chose to work on is a Voice Activated Television Set that would operate from anywhere in a room at anytime. The reasons we chose to use this, as a project is one. This would help the environment. A voice activated TV set would keep people from throwing dead batteries out into the environment and harming the land. Since most dead batteries still contain acids, they can leak out at any given moment and burn plants and even animals, killing them all. 2. It is an advantage for people. Especially for the disabled because most of them are stuck in hospital rooms with nothing to do but rest and they want to watch a show. They would not have to move from their positions to work the TV or to get the remote, which is sitting halfway, across the room. On the other hand, if a parent is alone carrying around a baby and cannot turn on the TV for the kids that are running around, then what? We thought that a voice activated TV set is something that most homes would need if their owners were the working type people. Our hypothesis is that we can plan a TV set that would do just what we wanted it to do. If the room is filled with noise, then we want to create an activation that would operate to certain keywords. Therefore, the TV would not shut off at the sound of a baby crying, or the channel will not change at the shout of a mother. We want to be able to create the perfect activation set.
III. DESCRIPTIONOur programming, with the help of many other companies, will make the project actually work. We are only planning the project and hopefully we will successful enough to get it to work. This project we are programming will hopefully be a tremendous help to the disabled people and the environment. This project will understand and carry out certain voice commands.
InvestigationWith the voice recognition many people through out the United States have found that home recognition is helpful to them. The voice recognition will pay no attention to the noisy environment in the living room.
Methods and MaterialsAfter we did some research on voice recognition, we planned on building a model or hook up a computer to a television and try to make our project work. J Since we need a voice card and a computer has one inside already. We decided to go that way and use the computer to send out commands to the television. Sad to say our plan did not carry out. The materials we planned to use:
Our results for the programming are not complete. We have contacted software developers and researched on the Internet for voice activation.
V. CONCLUSIONThe conclusion in which we found was, there was none. We haven't gotten the programming part of our project done. We will continue to work as hard as we can to get what we need to finish our programming. We've recently gotten some help from the creators of smARTspeak, and hopefully their help with enable us to get our programming done. To program voice recognition is really complicated, and we hope to have it planned out and ready for testing before the end of the year. If we do not complete our project, then we would like to say, "At least we tried."
