Challenge Team Interim Report
For oursupercomputing project our team is building a Beowulf. A Beowulf is one way to create a supercomputer cheaply and with resources available to not only large corporations and universities, but also to high school students like us. Our team is setting up the Beowulf using mutiple nodes which connect to one switch. We installed Linux on a single processor machine to familarize ourselves with how it works. Then we installed it on a duel processor machine so we could gain experience with mutiple processors and run performance tests. One of the members of our team was chosen to be the mentor for our group because he has experience with MPI. He has been coaching us how to use Linux and MPI. Our sponsors have submitted a proposal asking for a grant in order to purchase the quipment needed to build our Beowulf. The items included in our proposal are: a duel pentium III processor, 128 or 256 MB RAM, SCSI host adapter, graphics adapter, onboard Intel 82558 10/100 Ethernet(network), I/O connection, floppy and CD-ROM drives, storage bays and power supply. Our team has been reading and learning the Cisco Networking Cirriculun to help us networkk our supercomputer. We also drew a layout for the setup of our beowulf. In order for us to network our system we must have an accurate drawing of how our porcessors, monator and keyboard will be placed. Team Members Sponsoring Teachers Project Advisor(s)
