Challenge Team Interim Report

Team Number: 080 School Name: Ramah High School Area of Science: Probability Project Title: The Truth About M&Ms

The M&M/Mars company claims that 30 percent of the M&Ms in a regular sized bag are brown, 20 percent are red, 10 percent are green, 10 percent are blue, and 10 percent are orange. In order to find out if the company's numbers were correct we bought 12 regular sized bags of plain M&Ms. We counted the number of M&Ms in four of the bags and the number of each color. In bag one there were 60 total M&Ms. There were 22 brown, 11 yellow, 8 green, 9 blue, 4 orange, and 6 red. In bag 2 there were 56 total M&Ms. There were 23 brown, 8 yellow, 3 green, 1 blue, 3 orange, and 18 red. In bag 3 there were 61 total M&Ms. There were 7 brown, 12 yellow, 6 green, 11 blue, 0 orange, and 25 red. In bag number 4 there were 60 total M&Ms. There were 17 brown, 9 yellow, 7 green, 5 blue, 0 orange, and 22 red. From these numbers we figured the percentages. Following this we proceded to figure the percentages of all the colors of all 12 bags. There were 709 total M&Ms. Our final percentages were 16 percent blue compared to the company's figure of 10 pecent, 22 percent red compared to 20 percent, 9 percent green compared to 10 percent, 14 percent yellow compared to 20 percent, 30 percent brown compared to 30 percent, and 9 percent orange compared to 10 percent. We plan to look into the matter further and we'll get back to you. We think that the final results will be that the companys figures will not be correct even if one were to extend the research to more than a few bags.
