Flow Measurement in Evacuation Scenarios

Area of Science: Physics - Fluid dynamics

Abstract: Whether modeling the evacuation of people from or into a building or the evacuation of water in a drainage ditch, both the movement of people and the movement of water can be considered fluid dynamics, and fluid dynamics can be used to model the response of fluids to obstacles.

The purpose of this project is to model fluids moving out of an area with obstacles in their paths. The model will determine how the distribution of obstacles and exit points will change movement of the fluid.

Using preexisting data on known fluids like crowds of people and drainage water, I will work with mentors to create a flow measurement model in Java and apply it to several real-world problems.
