The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) lasts a life time and affects 1 to 2 babies per 1,000 born. Birth defects occur when the baby is exposed to alcohol while in the womb of their mother. Such birth defects are various social, mental, physical, and emotional disabilities or a combination of all. FAS can also lead a mother to having a miscarriage.
A solution to our problem is mothers should take a class on the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and learn about it and its affects on the life of their baby. Mothers, soon to be mothers or people that want to have a child should learn how to be aware of being pregnant and how to manage it.
The progress that we have made so far is surprising to us because we have found new information on FAS that we didn't know about. The new information we have found is FAS is the most common cause for mental retardation, FAS is totally preventable, the baby can be exposed to alcohol in breastfeeding when the mothers had a few drinks and feeds her child, the amount and time of alcohol intake determines the type and extent of the birth defects, excessive alcohol exposure can cause damage during all stages of pregnancy, FAS birth defects are expensive, and most important, FAS is not hereditary.
The result that we expect to see at the end of this project is to at least see that the syndrome decreases in numbers over the years to come. We also expect to see that mothers are more aware of this syndrome and can overcome it by not taking in alcohol and thinking of their baby's life.
