Project Title: Autonomous Air Traffic Control

Problem Definition: To simulate air traffic controlled entirely by a program constructed using Java.

Problem Solution: The simulation can be used to prescribe exact departure and arrival times for each aircraft in the environment. The program works simulateously with all other airports to coordinate the flow of air traffic.

Each aircraft "sends" a message to the airport of its destination and requests permission to land. The program enters the plane into its landing queue at the airport. Then according to each aircraft's distance from the airport, they are re-ordered so that those closest to the airport get first priority on the runway. Each aircraft gets a certain time period in which they have the runway reserved for them.

The program then calculates at what speed each aircraft should fly at so that they arrive at the airport at their own prescribed time to land.

Once the aircraft lands, after a random period of time, it goes to the departure queue to use the runway to takeoff. Then, this process begins all over again.

The program works simultaneously with multiple airports and numerous aircraft.

Progress to Date: Thus far, the team has begun work on the Java program, and expects the finished product to be finished with results thereof completed in time for the final report deadline (if all goes according to plan).
