Lasting Effects of Drinking (FAS)Team: 101 School: SHIPROCK HIGH Area of Science: Medicine and Health
Proposal: This project focuses on the problem of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). FAS is caused when women who are pregnant and drink alcohol risk giving birth to a child with mental and physical abnormalities. Fetal alcohol syndrome is a very preventable birth defect, yet many children suffer from it due to their parents’ abuse of alcohol.
We plan to design a program with StarLogo, which will show pregnant women who are informed and others who are not informed and who are at risk of FAS. We will use patches to represent an education center and another patch to represent a bar. When the women land on the bar they will drink, but if they land on the education center they will know not to drink. With our project we would like to inform women about the lasting effects of FAS.
We plan to research our topic through the use of the internet and interviews from parents of FAS victims and doctors who know about FAS.
This project is important because it is a form of child abuse and the victim will have to cope with this disorder for the rest of his or her life.
