The Affect of Glacial Melt-Rates

Area of Science: Environmental Sciences


Proposal: We would like to measure and display the melt-rate of glaciers in Antarctica and predict how it will affect nearby ecosystems, oceanic water levels, and global weather.
We predict that the rate at which glaciers melt is increasing dramatically and is cooing tropical water that houses fragile ecosystems such as the Great Barrier Reef. The insertion of excess fresh water will decrease sodium levels and raise oceanic water levels, submerging the reef with deeper, colder, and less salty waters. We also predict that there will be and increase of tropical storms.
We hope to be able to predict what will happen to the delicate ecosystems of the Indian Ocean and Antarctica in the future and try to prevent extinction or endangerment of affected life-forms.
We will discuss methods of project execution with a specialist; measure the melt-rate of glaciers and use computer programs to show what is happening and what will happen in the future.
