Decline of the Navajo LanguageTeam: 19 School: BLOOMFIELD HIGH Area of Science: Linguistic Anthropology
Proposal: With the help of Chapter Houses on the navajo reservation, we hope to gather information regarding the population in an area and the number of fluent speakers of the navajo language. We hope to get the information from 4 generations (i.e. the great granparents, parents, the person interviewed, and their children).
With this information, we hope to see a trend and be able to predict the number of fluent speakers of the navajo language in years to come.
If we are succesful, this program may help to preserve the navajo language for future generations.
We would like to model the trend and how it changes on Starlogo. We would also like to see if having a class in a school environment that teaches the Navajo language would change the rate of decline of the number of fluent speakers of the Navajo language.
Some mentors that we are going to talk with are two language art teachers at BHS: Mr. Thompson and Mrs. Hinson. They have connections with previous students and other professionals who might be able to help us.
