Proposal: For our project, we will create an Eulerian 3-dimensional model of a fluid. This type of model can be used in many different areas. It can model many fluid problems such as an airfoil, a shockwave, liquids, air-conditioning, and vehicle aerodynamics. We will be creating a tool that will run on a small number of processors and can model reasonable size problems. We will investigate how certain variables such as mesh size and numerical methods affect the accuracy and runtime of our model. The numerical methods will be taken from Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws, Randall J. LeVeque(1992), beginning with the Lax-Wendroff method.
We will look at:
Methods for a fixed runtime and compare accuracy.
Methods for a fixed mesh size and compare runtime and accuracy.
Methods for a fixed accuracy and compare runtime.
Our hypothesis is that higher quality models will show better results with fixed resources than lower quality models. However there may be standard test problems where the different types of models do not show a wide variance of accuracy.
