Prairie Dawgs

Team: 71

School: MELROSE HIGH

Area of Science: Zoology

Proposal: Prairie Dawgs

The problem we want to study is about prairie dogs and how they spread. We would like to know how predators, human factors, and the environment affect the speed and direction of a prairie dog town’s growth.

When dealing with prairie dogs, some of the importances are: the economic impact to farmers and ranchers. The safety concerns to cattle, and horseback riders, who might step into a prairie dog hole. Also they can carry many diseases. The upside is that they can be used as pets, and are prey for other animals.

Our plan of action is to research as much as we can about prairie dogs through the internet, library, and interviews with local experts. Using knowledge we will unearth, we will make a model using StarLogo, which will simulate the movements and spread of prairie dogs. Hopefully, using this knowledge, we will find out and fully understand the dynamics of natures little dogs, and find out how to control their population.
