Monsoon Rains in the Southwestern U.S.Team: 83 School: ONATE HIGH Area of Science: Environmental Science
Proposal: Mentor: Kyle Fitzpatrick
Problem:
Can global warming warrant an effect on summer monsoon rains in the southwestern United States?
Hypothesis:
This ecosystem, this culture, has become used to monsoons. A harsher monsoon season can, for example, harm agriculture, economy, and threaten reservoir capacity.
Explanation:
Monsoons occur in centralized regions around the world: in India, Australia, Africa, Asia, and even in the New Mexico-Arizona region. Locally, there have been recent flooding disasters as a result of intense summer rains. We plan to create a one-dimensional climate model that, among other basic physical processes, reflects energy of incoming and outgoing radiation. Using climate data to establish an understanding of temperature and the strength of a monsoon, we will conduct model testing demonstrating various scenarios.
