Expectations for the Challenge Teacher Sponsor

  1. During the Summer Teacher Institute, you will participate in a mini Challenge:

    • teaming with at least one other teacher at the institute

    • checking that your project follows the computational science design at http://challenge.nm.org/ctg/overview/project.shtml

    • creating a project proposal due, Friday, July 17th

    • researching your topic online, with Google Scholar, perhaps at the library

    • creating an interim report, due Tuesday, July 22nd

    • participating in interim judging on Wednesday, July 23rd

    • participating in final judging on Friday, July 25th.

  2. During the 2008 -09 school year, you will

    • be a teacher sponsor for at least one Challenge team, 2-5 students for the 2008 09 school year;

    • plan to attend kickoff, project evaluations, and expo and awards day;

    • explain administrative support needed for a successful Challenge year: substitutes for teacher sponsor throughout the year, registration fee for students and buses and bus driver to kickoff in Glorieta in October , February evaluation and Expo in Los Alamos in April. A letter for your administration will be in your notebook and will be discussed at the Institute;

    • contact consult@challenge.nm.org with any questions. Consult can come visit, help with administrative support, find creative ways to raises some funds if needed, motivate teams and find a team science, math or programming consultant;

    • team with language arts teacher for credit and assistance with technical writing of proposals, interim reports and mostly final report;

    • read weekly Monday Morning Messages;

    • respond to deadlines for room registrations at the kickoff and Expo and

    • have a good time doing all this!
