Avalanchers

Over 100 people lose their lives globally due to avalanches while skiing. The purpose of our project is to develop a new way of finding people who are lost under an avalanche to reduce the number of deaths per year to avalanches. This issue may also help assist other people in creating better and more effective ways of detecting people hidden under the snow.

The plan for this project is to create something like a GPR for detecting people under the snow. We will start by first, creating a prototype using simpler modern technology that has a receiver that we can program. Next, we will test the abilities of our prototype and make adjustments according to the results. Then after we make adjustments, we will find something we can use to test our prototype that mimics the characteristics of snow. Once we have completed those tasks, we will attach a screen to the system and generate an AI to recognize ski’s, poles, and boots. We will conduct testing on volunteers that are trained to use the system and use the snow mimic to further explore our product. 

Overall the final goal we want to achieve is to create something to save the lives of people who get trapped under snow.
