Area of Science: Epidemiology

Proposal: Dona Ana County Human Society had to euthanize many dogs at their facilities due to an outbreak of distemper. According to the article “Distemper in Dogs” (www.akc.org/expertadvice/health/distemper, Distemper has 2 stages. It is a paramyxovirus that is difficult to treat. The easiest way to prevent Distemper is vaccination. KRWG news station reported 7 dogs tested positive Distemper. Fifteen percent of dogs at the shelter were being treated. The research will be to find out the transmission rate and death rate of dogs at the pound based on the number of dogs in the shelter population. We will start with 7 infected, since the shelter had 7 test positive for the infection. There is a different survival rate for puppies 1 out of 5 chance to survive versus grown dogs 50 percent chance of surviving the outbreak. The source will give other shelters of the numbers of dogs that will be most like lost to an outbreak of Distemper.
