The Mission of Plastic Decomposition: Plastic Edition

Team: 59

School: New Mexico Tech Upward Bound Math & Science

Area of Science: Botany and Environmental Sciences

Proposal: Problem Definition: The accumulation of almost 300 million tons of plastic products each year is overwhelming and will soon consume the planet. There must be alternatives to reduce the amount of waste collected each year and there must be ways to effectively start getting rid of the waste in natural ways.

Purpose of Project: To effectively reduce the accumulation of waste product (plastic) through the use of a genus of mushroom called pleurotus ostreatus to break down the non-biodegradable material into an organic material which could be safely consumed and ultimately turned into compost.

Plan of Action: Through the use of simulations created by coding, we will project how long it will take for the mushrooms to start effectually reducing the amount of plastic in landfills and how many fungi will need to be grown to achieve such goal.
