Mix It Up

Proposal: This project works to improve upon the issue of factories and various industries trying to find the most time-saving and least costly way of mixing liquids into a mixture. This project has a high importance in industry and fast food chains. Take for example McDonalds. The founders were looking for a quicker way to make their milkshakes when they first started as a fast food chain. So, they adopted the idea of mixing a packet of powdered milk and water to make their milkshakes quicker and cost less to make. This project is going to be done by first doing some research and making a simulation. This simulation is going to take two liquids [either a homogeneous or heterogeneous] and mix them together. This project will figure out the best speeds for making this mixture. First, the initial stirring speed. Next, the rotational speed throughout the entirety of the process of making the mixture. Finally, the ending speed as the mixture finalizes. As the model progresses, it will be calibrated based upon test results in Net Logo. The mechanism in which the liquid will be mixed together will be taken into account. Also the effectiveness of the method with a given liquid’s viscosity will be a factor as well. We might also explore the threshold of effectiveness regarding mixing viscous fluids. Fluids with a high viscosity might not benefit from specific methods of mixing. For example, cement mixers/trucks rely on side friction by rotating the container.
