Mapping wildfires in Southwest Colorado

Team: 33

School: San Juan College High

Area of Science: Environmental Science

Proposal: Without mapping the possible pathways of fire spread, communities remain unable to take precautions that will assist in containing the fire and/or an earlier evacuation. We aim to predict possible fire routes if and when a wildfire occurs, so that we may prevent the negative consequences of a wildfire. To conduct this project, we will begin with researching the following factors: Vegetation, drought conditions and wind speeds in an at-risk location in Southwest Colorado. We will obtain various statistics/information that relates to these factors by researching past wildfires in the area, investigating beetle kills' contribution to the spread, and using a drone to get a clear view of the area. We will record our information using various tools including NetLogo and Spreadsheets.
