Proposal: Our team is continuing a project from last year which we completed as first year participants in the Supercomputing Challenge.
Our project is about traffic in Melrose and how students go about getting food for lunch, at our local restaurants Allsup’s and Dales. The aim of the model is to find out the quickest and safest travel time from the school parking lot to get lunch and return. We have made a simulation of our town in the form of a game. In our interface we have located all the roads, parking lots, and main significant areas in our town.
This model is intended to look like an aerial view of our hometown of Melrose, New Mexico, and was done using NetLogo as our programming language.
We were able to make the basic components of our model work, but we would like to increase the realism by trying to portray ACTUAL traffic numbers into our computer simulation. Additionally, we realize we need to make interactions with other traffic smoother and more realistic. As we do these things, we feel we will have greatly improved our model, and will have come closer to our goal of having a useful simulation to affect student decision making before they drive.
