Interim: Problem Definition: It was stated by RCWPulse that, “Demolition inside the Sequoia High School`s main gymnasium is in full swing after a burst pipe caused irreparable damage just weeks before the start of the fall sports season.” (Worthington) “Now, two weeks since the leak was discovered, the gym walls have been repaired, and construction workers are in the process of tearing out the damaged floor and subfloor, according to ( Sequoia Athletic Director Mellis) Schmidt. We also had our own problem where it ruined our floors caused by a running faucet, about two and a half years ago.
But with the fall term just around the corner, Schmidt and other school administrators will have to work around the loss of a central campus facility.” The leak was discovered by a passerby that witnessed water leaking out of the gym doors.
Problem Solution:Many buildings left unattended for extended periods of time can be damaged by water and/or gas leaks. The Diamondback STEM team knew they had to invent an early warning system to detect a problem as soon as possible. We plan to hack an iRobot Roomba to automatically detect water and/or gas leaks to prevent further damages to affected areas.
Progress to Date: With testing, we also proved that a microcontroller can be utilized to alert the personnel of the hazard.
Expected Results: To prevent further gas and/or water leaks
