Electives at Supercomputing Challenge Kickoff

New Mexico Tech, October 22nd Saturday  7:30 – 9:00 PM

  1. Cyberfire, Speare 4 - In this simulated hacking event, participants will "break in" to a poorly-coded mainframe. By learning common attack techniques through experimentation, participants gain a strong sense of how to code with security in mind.
    Leaders: Neale Pickett, Alum, LANR
  2. Did You Really Delete That File?, Cramer Hall 127 - Is data really gone when it is deleted? Can deleted files be recovered? Impress your friends and family knowing how to get deleted files back.
    Leader: Jesse Crawford, NMT alum
  3. Mafia, Cramer Hall 101 – Otherwise called Werewolf, Vampire, Witch Hunt, or Pirates. It is a game modeling a battle between an informed minority (the mafia) and an uninformed majority (the townspeople).
Leader: John Paul Gonzales, Santa Fe Institute, UNM Alum
  4. Etscorn Campus Observatory  Catch the bus in the Workman Parking Lot at 7:30 for a unique star party.
Leaders: The NM Tech Astronomy Club
  5. Minecraft + Arduino evening Duo, Speare 5
Leader: James Wernike, LANL, NMT Alum
  6. eSports, Gold 105 & 107 - Video games can be used as a measuring tool for the advancement of technology. We are able to look at the transformation of graphics, animation, interaction, servers, hardware, coding sequences, and many other aspects required for the livelihood of a single game. These aspects of the videogame industry then combine with business which then lead to the creation and sustainment of esports. As a multi-billion dollar industry, esports has continued to open the gates as a crossover for competition and technology. We will discuss the overall health, longevity, and opportunities within the world of esports as well as pathways to achieve them. There will be some interactivity with some of the competition machines we have in the lab as well as some demonstrations with different games and hand-eye coordination tests.
    Leader: Damian Banks, NM Tech
