Smokey, Robotic fire weather detector

Proposal: The Problem:
The problem that we want to address and help with are the frequent wildfires that are happening here, in our state every year. We were especially inspired by the most recent one that was the largest in New Mexico’s recorded history. It's significant because more than 800,000 acres were burned in our state in 2022, including Calf Canyon/Hermit's Peak, Cooks Peak, and other areas.

Importance:
The problem of wildfires is important because they are life threatening and have been increasing in numbers throughout the years. Wildfires are also dangerous because they release CO2 into the air and contribute to global warming. Furthermore, since forests purify the air that we breathe, offer a home to much of the world’s wildlife and plants, and provide natural resources (e.g. timber and medical plants), it should be one of the main goals of every generation to protect them. And now, we are this generation.

Desired outcome:
The result of the project that we hope to get is a robotic fire weather condition detection system which will alert us about either very possible or already existing fires.

Plan:
We plan to work on a robotic fire weather condition detection system by regularly meeting and working with our engineering mentor by first putting the hardware pieces together, programming them, collecting data, and finally analyzing the data. We may then also work with another mentor on additional analysis and predictions that we might make based on the correlations found in our data.
